Family Reading Breaks

Family Reading Breaks are a great way for schools, family learning tutors, children’s centres and breakfast clubs to encourage children – and adults – to develop a love of reading.

In 2011 hundreds of schools helped children and parents enjoy books and reading activities together, and we are inviting all organisations – schools and other children’s and family centres - across the country to get involved for 2012.

A Family Reading Break is the perfect way to start; schools could hold sessions at times that are convenient for parents and carers (lunchtime or after school), so they can join their children and take part in activities where they develop a shared interest in reading and learning together.

The Family Reading Break provides a great opportunity for teachers to talk to mums, dads and carers about their reading and how they can help their children. These breaks will build on current family learning initiatives that your school may be running.

Here’s how you can join in:

"The Family Reading Break was a great way to get mothers, fathers and carers involved in their children's literacy, language and communication development." Swinton Queen Primary School, Rotherham

"With two kids it can be virtually impossible to read a 400 page book. But Quick Reads make it manageable. They have reignited my passion for reading!"
